This phrase of Anna Magjani is remembered even by those who have never seen her films and hardly know her fate. It has everything that made the actress unique: pride, defiance, refusal to please at all costs and fearlessness.

And in the beginning there was Rome - not yet dolce vita, but already a premonition of it. Chinechita challenged Hollywood, and the Eternal City became a filming location. Kino was poured into the air here. Mobsters, politicians and movie stars thronged the cafe verandas of Via Veneto - the same Roman high society that Fellini would soon turn into a myth.

However, in the very center of this cinematic explosion - with all its brilliance, noise and empty conceit - was Italy's greatest actress Anna Magnani.

She won't be able to sleep tonight. She wanders through the sleeping city, along its hollow-sounding stone pavements. Rome, which once opened her way to fame, became the decoration of her life, and now the dark squares and narrow streets, just like a labyrinth of memories, bring from the past those who were once by her side: Vittorio De Sica, Roberto Rossellini, Carlo Ponti, Suzo Cecchi d'Amico. And with them - love, despair, betrayal and pain.

At dawn, she will receive a call from Los Angeles, and Anna will find out if she will become the first Italian actress to win an Oscar for Best Actress.

Magjani has no idea that an unexpected guest will appear on the doorstep of her house at night. With him, everything that she couldn't leave in the past will break into her life...
