Unique materials, letters and photographs stored in the archive of her last husband, the playwright Arthur Miller, as well as behind-the-scenes footage, personal diaries, poems and notes that the actress bequeathed to Lee Strasberg - her longtime teacher and close friend - have become available to a wider audience for the first time and formed the basis for a new perspective of her character in this film.

It's a brave attempt that creates a rare sense of privilege - to look behind the curtain of history and turn a documentary study into a deeply personal experience, a sentimental journey into the past. Where the legend fades and a lonely woman remains, who has been chasing her dream all her life.

Vulnerability, agonizing feelings of inadequacy, inner struggle and hidden anxiety are revealed here with stunning clarity.

We have long crossed the line beyond which Marilyn Monroe's intelligence and insight would have to be proven. Even when she played the "silly blonde", she never became a banal caricature: her characters always had a light, almost invisible self-irony - too subtle to be accidental: "I can be smart when I need to be, but most men don't like it."

The film is made as a multi-voiced canvas, in which Monroe is revealed not only as a symbol of sensuality, but also as a heroine who seems to have stepped out of the pages of Tennessee Williams' plays - a living, vulnerable woman with inner strength, respectful in her thirst for understanding and human compassion.

It's a sophisticated and artistically expressive work, both a witty exploration of fate and a tender message of love for the very blonde the world so desperately wanted to adore but couldn't really understand.
