The play by modern British playwright Robert Icke, The Doctor, addresses distinctly contemporary themes. Gatis Šmits's production of The Doctor, with a certain irony, touches on the much-discussed issue of political correctness as well as the coexistence of different social groups, passionately standing up for their values.

The head of the hospital, Ruth Wolff, is a strong, commanding woman who is used to carrying the burden of both professional and personal hardships on her shoulders. Everything changes on the day when, in defending her patient's right to a peaceful death, Ruth denies her the chance to receive the last rites. This incident becomes the beginning of a war between the patient's relatives' religious convictions and the medical code of ethics, as well as between the female doctor’s mind and emotions. It forces the famous professor to stand alone before the judgment of society and settle accounts with her past.
