The mural “Bird Garden” to be unveiled in Zasulauks

As part of the school’s 80th anniversary, in spring 2025 the 4th-year students of the Janis Rozentāls Art School began creating the mural “Bird Garden” near the playground in Zasulauks, at Kurpnieku Street 2. This year, the project has been expanded with new paintings as well as audio stories introducing the typical habitat and behavior of the birds depicted.

On October 22 at 2: 00 PM, the second and final stage of the mural will be unveiled.

The concept author of the mural idea is 4th-year student Kate Minkeviča, who supervised the project’s realization.

“In the fence design, I combined various stylized birds found in Latvia and their habitats in order to introduce children to Latvia’s nature. I chose a color palette that would bring some color play to the playground on gray days.”

The involved teachers, Vita Jurjāne and Vladislavs Rublis, are pleased with the students’ responsiveness in creating the mural on an unusually large scale and in difficult weather conditions.

Experts from the Latvian Ornithological Society have prepared descriptions of the birds shown, which have been recorded in the audio stories and will in the future be available to read with the help of QR codes.

The mural was created in cooperation with the Culture Department of the Riga City Council’s Education, Culture and Sports Department and is the beginning of a new platform that offers young artists the opportunity to express themselves creatively in the urban environment.
