Ballet "Nijinsky"

"Nijinsky" is a contemporary ballet by choreographer Marco Goecke about the ballet dancer and choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky. It reveals the most important moments of Nijinsky's life on and off stage, showing the close connection between art and madness.

For ten years, Vaslav Nijinsky (1890-1950) was the leading soloist and choreographer of the legendary Ballets Russes, directed by Sergei Diaghilev. His virtuoso leaps and androgynous charisma captivated audiences, while his bold choreography provoked scandals. The artist spent the last thirty years of his life in mental health care institutions.

"Nijinsky" had its world premiere with the dance company Gauthier Dance in Stuttgart in 2016. Since then, the production has toured extensively around the world. In 2017, Marco Goecke received the Italian dance award Danza&Danza for this production in the category of Best Choreography of the Year.
