Biruta Jansone Solo Exhibition “The Road”
From September 19 to November 14, 2026, visitors will be welcome at the Exhibition Hall of the Valmiera Museum to walk through the milestones in the life of the personal exhibition “The Road” by the well-known artist, painter, and art educator Biruta Jansone, familiar to many people from Valmiera and the surrounding region, and to view her creative contribution - drawings, watercolors, and paintings. Both newer and older works from the artist’s private collection, as well as from the collections of the Latvian National Museum of Art and the Valmiera Museum, will be on display.
The exhibition opening* and meeting with the artist will take place on September 19 at 1:00 p.m. Admission is free during the event.
In the mid-1970s, Biruta Jansone, together with her husband, also an artist, Jānis Roberts Jansons, and their two small children, while already expecting their third, took a leap into the unknown and moved from Riga to Valmiera. In 1976, they were among the first in the Latvian regions to help create the model of vocational education and founded the Valmiera Children’s Art School, and Biruta became its director (1976-1979, 1981-1990). Later, the road led to “Akmeņkalni” in Skaņkalne Parish on the outskirts of Mazsalaca, where, with the care of both, an art school was also established, which can certainly be called a lifelong project. More than 25 years have been devoted to work in this part of North Vidzeme. Both in Valmiera and especially at “Akmeņkalni,” generations of students were given, with great love and warmth, nourishment for the road ahead, both in art, by awakening their imagination and developing creativity, and in the indispensable wisdom of life. Thanks precisely to the Jansons, many young people chose to connect their future path professionally with art as well.
At one time, Biruta Jansone was also an energetic organizer of local women, so that they could all together engage in all kinds of educational and practical activities and gain new, useful knowledge. Women’s clubs were established in Sēļi, “Akmeņkalni,” and Mazsalaca. Biruta was also a longtime member of the Valmiera Zonta Club and has received its Commendation.
Biruta Jansone has participated in exhibitions both individually and together with her husband and other artists since 1976, in Latvia and abroad. Her works have also previously been shown at the Valmiera Museum. They are included in the collections of the Latvian Art Museum Fund of the Museum of the Latvian Artists’ Union, the Latvian National Museum of Art, the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, and private collections in Latvia, Denmark, Germany, France, Canada, and elsewhere.
In 2018, Biruta Jansone received the Cross of Recognition for her merits in the service of the Latvian state - for her long-standing creative contribution to art education and cultural work.
The Jansons have eleven grandchildren and now eight great-grandchildren. At present, Biruta and Jānis spend their days in Slampe, Tukums Municipality. Life moves more calmly now, but art is still being created, and both continue to take part in exhibitions.
