Bitty (Vjačeslavs Fomins) Memorial Exhibition “The Relationship Between Lightness and Weight”

On October 6 this year, the Latgale Culture and History Museum will open the first solo exhibition of Latgalian artist and graphic artist Vjačeslavs Fomins (better known as Bitty, 1976-2025), “The Relationship Between Lightness and Weight,” organized by the Latgale branch of the Art Academy of Latvia in collaboration with curator Katrīna Kūkoja and writer Laura Vinogradova. Bitty was an artist and associate professor at the Art Academy of Latvia, whose life and creative path were closely tied to Latgale. Born and raised in Ludza, he studied woodcarving at the Rēzekne Art School, and in 2006 earned a master’s degree in graphics from the Art Academy of Latvia. An outstanding master of classical printmaking techniques, Fomins was at the same time also a photographer and keen draughtsman, woodcarver and outstanding master of transformation.

The exhibition is a tribute on the artist’s 50th birthday, offering the broadest insight to date into Bitty’s oeuvre in one place.

In the exhibition, there is a chance to meet Vjačeslavs Fomins anew through his works, including a look at his student works and an observation of how his artistic thinking and recognizable signature style developed. At the same time, it is a conversation about the artist’s legacy and about art’s ability to continue the dialogue even when the artist himself is no longer present.
