The Twelve Chairs - online performance
The search for hidden jewels in one of the twelve chairs is the pretext for telling one of those Jewish stories in which the funny and the poignant are one and the same. This novel is, in a sense, also a collection of the folklore of Odessa's Jewish street life, of the same blood group as Isaac Babel's Odessa Stories, but it was written in a Soviet context. The censorship of the time, anti-Semitism, and other circumstances make this novel seem like a metaphor for perhaps something else as well. The possibilities for interpretation are open. We will use them.
The heroes of this story, Ostap Bender and his companion Kisa, have long since become part of folklore, and visualizing them on stage is on our part an impudent and hopeless act of courage. We apologize for that in advance.
