Portraits of Dorian Gray

The world-famous novel about beauty and its power most often captivates artists because the mirror facing the artist reflects more than mere appearance. It tempts one to reveal what has been seen or, on the contrary, to hide from others what you see yourself; it invites one to step through the mirror and try to stop the moment. For Wilde, beauty is not goodness, virtue, or honesty; it is immoral, just like art. Tempting in all its forms and mysterious. Perhaps the winged phrase “ars longa, vita brevis est” has lost its truth in the 21st century?
