Poetry Concert Series. "With Our Own Words." Ritvars Logins and Rūta Sīpola

In the poetry concert "With Our Own Words," two people in their twenties today - flutist Rūta Sīpola and New Riga Theatre actor Ritvars Logins - will weave together the poetry and correspondence letters of Knuts Skujenieks, then in his twenties, as well as favorite songs with the poet's words, searching in new sounds for an answer to the question of what it means to feel free. Then and now.

In 1962, the twenty-five-year-old Knuts Skujenieks was sentenced to seven years of imprisonment in Mordovia. His home, creative work, and the chance to decide his own life were suddenly taken away. But something remained that bars could not contain: language, imagination, love. Inner freedom.

During his imprisonment, hundreds of poems were written, and throughout all seven years, the correspondence between Knuts and his wife Inta continued - a fragile, ironic, and extraordinarily vivid bond between two people separated by time and distance.
