Birthday Cake

American contemporary playwright Noah Haidl has dedicated his latest play to his wife, reflecting on the power of love that can unite the past, present, and future. Life differs from what is planned, but one steady tradition runs through an entire lifetime. Every birthday, a cake is baked. There are 90 birthdays and there are 90 cakes.

The play’s original title is “Birthday Candles,” and it premiered in April 2022 almost

simultaneously in two seemingly diametrically opposed places - on New York’s Broadway, aimed at the widest possible audience, and at the temple of high art, Deutsches Theater Berlin. In this autumn’s theater critics’ poll conducted by the German magazine Theater heute, Noah Haidl’s new dramatic work has been ranked among the best plays of the year.

Performance venue: Lāčplēša Street 25, Main Hall.

Running time: 2h 30 min (2 acts).

Premiere on November 30, 2022.
