Lecture by philosopher Dr. phil. Māris Kūlis “Turbulence: Terrorism, Truth, and Reality in an Age of Uncertainty”

On 20 October 2026 at 6: 00 p.m., the Knowledge Commission of the Riga Latvian Society invites you to the lecture by philosopher Dr. phil. Māris Kūlis, “Turbulence: Terrorism, Truth, and Reality in an Age of Uncertainty,” in the Līgo Hall.

In his lecture, philosopher Māris Kūlis will turn to terrorism, propaganda, and the problem of truth, looking at how violence, information, and its interpretation shape our perception of reality. Is the problem of our time lies, or rather the ever-growing difficulty of distinguishing truth from appearance? And what role can philosophy still play in such a situation?

“We are currently living in a time that is increasingly described with the words ‘uncertainty,’ ‘crisis,’ and ‘turbulence.’ But what exactly is happening to a person’s ability to orient themselves in the world if not only what will happen tomorrow becomes uncertain, but also our understanding of what is happening right now?” asks Māris Kūlis.

Māris Kūlis (1985) is a philosopher and researcher at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the University of Latvia. He defended his doctorate in philosophy with the dissertation “Changes in the Understanding of Truth: A Historical-Communicative Model,” in which he analyzed the concept of truth and the role of communal sense in understanding truth. Māris Kūlis takes part in international conferences. The results of his scholarly work have been collected in books, and his academic articles have been published in internationally recognized journals.
