Cloakroom Attendants
It is May 2002. Less than a year after the terrorist attacks of September 11, the world’s understanding of certainty, security, and stability has changed. Fuel prices are rising sharply. The country is led by the charismatic Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga. Marija Naumova wins Eurovision. Heated debates are taking place about joining the European Union. Against the backdrop of these events, the Latvian National Theatre is preparing for an extensive renovation. Shortly before the troupe moves to the VEF Culture Palace, the final performances of Jānis Lūsēns and Māra Zālīte’s rock opera "Sphinx" are staged. While the audience of the production listens spellbound to Ivars Stonins’s baritone, young, confused, and in love cloakroom attendants pass the time in the theatre cloakroom. A fatal romantic comedy about mysterious predictions of the future, a meeting by the pyramids, and the thick fog in which our personal and global tomorrow has always been wrapped.
