Ilze Griezāne Exhibition In Search of the Ideal Landscape at the Latgale Central Library
The Latgale Central Library is hosting an exhibition by painter Ilze Griezāne, In Search of the Ideal Landscape. The exhibition brings together landscapes created in different years and seasons, revealing the artist’s long-standing dialogue with Latvian nature.
Landscape holds a special place in Ilze Griezāne’s creative work, with motifs of the Daugava River being especially significant. The artist draws inspiration from observing nature: a random ray of sunlight, the rhythm of clouds, a veil of mist, or the evening light can become the impulse for a painting. In her works, nature is revealed without human presence or a specific narrative, allowing viewers to feel its harmony, mystery, and timelessness.
The artist’s painting language is light and flowing. The oil paints are applied in glazes, creating an airy, watercolor-like quality and nuanced tonal range. Her paintings are marked by peace, silence, and clarity, inviting the viewer to pause, observe, and reflect.
The exhibition is also a story about the relevance of landscape painting today. In an age when visual culture is constantly changing, painting is still able to speak to the viewer directly and emotionally. In Ilze Griezāne’s works, the “ideal landscape” is not a specific place, but a feeling in which silence, light, and the mystery of nature’s presence meet.
Ilze Griezāne was born in 1970 in Līvāni. She graduated from the Rezekne Secondary School of Applied Arts and the Latgale branch of the Latvian Academy of Arts, and also earned a master’s degree in public management from Daugavpils University. She has been participating in exhibitions since 1991 and has held more than 20 solo exhibitions in Latvia. The artist has taken part in international painting plein airs in Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Portugal, and Turkey.
