Indulis and Arija
People, Death, Love, Life, Humanity - these are the great ideas that Rainis invites us to reflect on in all his works, and theater has the power to make us feel them with the heart, not just grasp them with the mind, even a hundred years after these plays were created.
The Curonian chieftain Indulis and the daughter of a German knight, Arija, live, fight, and love while under unbearable pressure, caught in the turbulence of the great order of the world - their love is born on the battlefield, but to love the enemy means to betray one’s homeland, one’s people, and thus oneself.
The large-scale production for Rainis’s 160th anniversary is being created as a joint project of two cultural institutions of national significance - on stage, alongside the ensemble of actors, will be the State Academic Choir “Latvija” under the direction of Māris Sirmais.
