Performance-tour "My Father - a Russian" at the Corner House - BezRindas

Relaxation

Very recently, in January 2026, Inga Žolude’s autobiographical novel “Father” was published. The novel is woven through with the heroine’s mosaic of memories about her father, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. In the same way that the illness aggressively suppresses common sense, the father suppresses and corrects the truth about the war in Ukraine that is happening now.

Director Viesturs Roziņš emphasizes that the performance very precisely reveals how the war in Ukraine affects the world of a family and an individual. Through her story, Inga Žolude has created symbolic characters that embody the different views present in Latvian society. The performance is a tour through space, time, and the world of the main character Agnese, in which she tries to find the truth in a highly ambiguous relationship.

On 17 June 1940, the Soviet Union army occupied Latvia. Already in the autumn, in the corner building at Brīvības and Stabu Streets in Riga, the occupation regime established the headquarters of its repressive institutions. Over time, people came to call this building the Corner House, they kept away from it and were afraid of it.

Today, the exhibition “The History of the Cheka in Latvia” offers an opportunity to learn about the repressive system of the Soviet occupation and the activities of the State Security Committee in Latvia. The performance-tour “My Father - a Russian” uses the language of theater to speak about personal experience, identity, family and society, and to make the place where historical events took place not only a witness to the past, but also a space for a conversation about ourselves.

The creative team of the performance consists of director Viesturs Roziņš, actors Inga Alsiņa Lasmane, Mihails Abramovs, Regīna Devīte, and Dana Avotiņa - Lāce. The set designer is Valters Kristbergs, the costume designer is Ilze Vītoliņa, the composer is Jēkabs Nīmanis, and the playwright is writer Inga Žolude. The producer of the performance is Kristīne Radovica.

The performance takes place at Brīvības iela 61, Riga

During the autumn and winter period, the Corner House may be chilly due to limited heating. To make your visit pleasant and comfortable, we invite you to choose warm clothing.
