The original British theatre company Mischief Theatre’s The Play That Goes Wrong has been running in London’s West End for 19 years. Its success is no laughing matter, even though everything Mischief Theatre does is funny. They laugh at themselves, or more precisely, at the failures of the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society, at themselves as actors, directors, and all the essentials of making theatre. They have packed their production with everything good that can be said about British black humour.

At Dailes, The Play That Goes Wrong is one of 20 versions currently being performed in different languages. It is an exact Latvian adaptation of the original version, developed under the guidance of Mischief Theatre director Amy Marchant. This has made it possible to experience in Riga the production so well known in London.

The play tells the story of the aforementioned Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society and the premiere of their production The Murder at Haversham Manor, during which absolutely everything goes wrong - props will not stay on the wall, actors forget their lines, and the stage floor collapses. Despite the force majeure circumstances, the drama society’s enthusiasts are determined to play the show to the end, even if, in the name of their goal, they have to step over corpses.

Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields’ play won the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award for Best Comedy of the Year in 2015.
