Iveta Laure's exhibition "Love and Silk"
In the solo exhibition "Love and Silk", the artist Iveta Laure (1962) combines works created at different times and specially created for the Rothko Museum, which talk about women's rights and self-determination, family and inherited roles, corporeality, sexuality, violence and freedom. Among the creative impulses are Aspazija's unyielding "NO" and the struggle of the suffragists, rural life and handicraft traditions of the first free state of Latvia, war and deportations, the Catholic code of Latgale, Eastern cultural ideas about women and love, as well as the sexism that is still present today.
Silk weaves these disparate stories into one visual language. Painted, embroidered, folded into spatial objects and installations, it takes in both deeply intimate experiences and imprints of collective history.
