Exhibition “Contemporary Drawing: Florence and Daniel Guerlain's Gifts to the Centre Pompidou”
The exhibition is an internationally significant and artistically high-quality collaborative project between the Latvian National Museum of Art (LNMM) and the Centre Pompidou. The works included in the display come from a collection that collectors and patrons of the arts Florence and Daniel Guerlain have donated to the Centre Pompidou over the past twenty years.
The Guerlain collection is thematically diverse and distinctly contemporary in character. From the nearly 1,200 works in the donation, 98 drawings by 43 artists, created from the 1970s to 2019, have been selected for the exhibition in Riga.
The exhibition offers insight into the experience of contemporary drawing. The works are mostly emotional, though at times an analytical and rational approach is also evident. From airy lines to compositions rooted in reality, artists' touches of pencil, graphite, ink, gouache, watercolor, and other materials create worlds that can be both fragile and firmly constructed.
