Exhibition "Māra Vaičunas. Beyond"
In the art world that Māra Vaičunas entered, especially in painting, when ideological significance and figuralism were regarded as the highest, fullest expression of thought, her works did not fit in. Forms, having overcome gravity, were located where the body no longer had experience, and that was already a conversation outside the official language.
Māra Vaičunas (1949–2019) graduated from the Ceramics Department of the Latvian Academy of Arts in 1976 with a diploma work, a ceramic wall panel for the Valmiera Dairy Plant. After graduating from the academy, she no longer worked in ceramics, because her original goal was painting. The artist has taken part in exhibitions since 1977.
The works by Felicitas Pauļuka (1925–2014), Līvija Endzelīna (1927–2008), Baiba Vegere (1948), Antonija Lutere (1946), Inga Meldere (1979), Amanda Ziemele (1990) and Georgs Šenbergs (1915–1989) included in the exhibition are creative counterparts, kindred spirits who expand the conversation with and about Māra Vaičunas. By placing the artist in this context rather than leaving her alone, the painted finds the fitting environment in which it is good to be, away from the crowds.
