JĀNIS UNDA. LATGALE'S IDENTITY
Since the donation from Ieva Unda received in 2023, the largest collection in scope (91 watercolors, 226 drawings, sketches) and the one that most fully characterizes the artistic work of Jānis Unda, is kept at the Preiļi History and Applied Art Museum. To promote Latgale art as part of Latvia, the museum offers visitors a traveling exhibition of the outstanding watercolorist’s works, “JĀNIS UNDA. LATGALE’S IDENTITY”. The exhibition provides knowledge about the rise and development of watercolor painting in Latgale and introduces Jānis Unda’s artistic work. Thematically, it includes four parts: LAND, CLOUDS, FORESHADOWINGS, HOME. “Jānis Unda was endowed with talent, broad knowledge, and all the qualities of a good art teacher.
This gave him the opportunity to be not only a successful artist, but also to pass on his craft skills and life experience to dozens and dozens of his students both in several Latgale schools and in the Rīga School of Applied Arts branch in Rēzekne that he established himself, as well as at the Rēzekne Secondary School of Applied Arts (1972–1996). It can be said that in the works of today’s artists and craft masters in various fields there is also a part of Jānis Unda’s understanding of art and worldview. The line of continuity is very strong and shapes the innovations of contemporary art.” I. Burāne. 2024.
The project was created with the support of the STATE CULTURAL CAPITAL FOUNDATION.
