In a remote cottage in the Swiss Alps, among a collection of guns, bottles of poison, and her own dark thoughts, lives Patricia Highsmith (Oscar winner Helen Mirren), the legendary and vicious author of several chilling detective novels. Her secluded world is unexpectedly disturbed by an unwanted visitor, Edward (Alden Ehrenreich), a young and ambitious publishing representative from New York. His mission is to convince the famous writer at any cost to write another novel about her best-known fictional creation, Tom Ripley, the charming and cold-blooded manipulator and murderer.

But the writer has one strict rule: Edward must plan the perfect murder and step into the killer's shoes. By provoking him and almost driving him to a breakdown, she delves into the darkest corners of his past. Meanwhile, the audience is drawn into a dual narrative in which the real world merges with the self-created crime story - a tale full of passion, deceit, and murder about an ordinary guy who meets a rich girl and is determined to get her family's fortune.
