CONNEMARA'S SKULL
Martin McDonagh
Connemara's Skull
Black comedy
In the Irish back of beyond, where it rains more often than people say hello, lives the gravedigger Mick Dowd. Every year, on the church's orders, he digs up old bones to make room for the newly dead. The work is dirty, but honest. Until a name appears on the list that he would rather never see there.
The skeletons dug up from the graves begin to take on not only shape, but also a voice - a voice of suspicion, memory, and old gossip. The air smells of peat, whiskey, and guilt. But laughter is as inevitable as death.
"Connemara's Skull" is a tragicomedy about memory, loneliness, and humanity's tendency to decay, both inside and out. With his characteristic cruelty and humor, McDonagh makes us laugh where we usually stay silent, and look death in the face - without pathos, but with a smirk.
"For what do we leave behind, if not old bones and bad jokes?"
