A performance in 2 acts
The occupation of Latvia and the dubious actions of Latvia's statesmen in June 1940 are one of the darkest chapters in our history. At its center is the state's self-proclaimed leader, Kārlis Ulmanis. His personality continues to arouse interest, skepticism, and admiration. But what was it really like? Could Latvia have preserved its freedom even in the darkest moment of history, if Ulmanis had acted differently?
The performance was inspired by two Dailes Theatre productions - “Gūsteknis pilī” (2011) and “Četras dienas jūnijā” (1989), especially the legendary portrayal of Ulmanis by Uldis Vazdiks in the Awakening-era production, which took place in the present-day Presidential Palace, in the last workplace of President Ulmanis.
Cast: Imants Strads (President Ulmanis), Juris Bartkevičs (General Balodis), Toms Veličko (Researcher Kārlis Ulmanis), Kaspars Dumburs (Alfrēds Bērziņš), Andris Bulis (Vilhelms Munters), Mārtiņš Upenieks (Jānis Rudums)
Director – Toms Treinis, set designer – Kristaps Kramiņš, costume designer – Marta Treine, playwright – Matīss Gricmanis, music by Alise Rancāne
