At the torchlight procession and memorial event, the heroes of the Latvian War of Independence will be honored

Marking the month of patriotic remembrance in Latvia, the Riga Monument Agency is inviting residents for the fifth year in a row to take part in a memorial event honoring the heroes of the Latvian War of Independence. The event will take place on October 31, bringing participants together for a torchlight procession and a solemn ceremony at Sudrabkalniņš.

The torchlight procession will begin at 4:45 p.m. at the Monument to the Autotank Regiment on Pulka Street 5, and participants will walk to Sudrabkalniņš. There, from 5:45 p.m. at the monument to the soldiers of the 6th Riga Infantry Regiment, a solemn remembrance ceremony will take place.

The event route has been chosen symbolically. During the Latvian War of Independence, today’s Slokas Street was an important Riga-Jūrmala route along which soldiers traveled to battle sites, including Sudrabkalniņš, where the newly established Latvian state was defended in 1919.

The monument to the soldiers of the 6th Riga Infantry Regiment was unveiled on October 31, 1937. It is dedicated to the defenders of Riga who fought for Latvia’s freedom in 1919. Special tribute will be paid to the soldiers of the 6th Riga Infantry Regiment who took part in the battles against the Bermontians in the Anniņmuiža area, as well as to all heroes of the Latvian War of Independence.

A few years ago, the monument, which had suffered from the effects of time and vandalism, was restored at the request of the Riga Monument Agency.

The purpose of the event organized by the Riga Monument Agency is to remind people of the historical significance of the Latvian War of Independence and the events that shaped our country’s identity, as well as to strengthen public understanding of the price of freedom and those who defend it.

The organizers invite everyone interested to join the torchlight procession together with family members and friends. To ensure that all participants are provided with torches, please register in advance by writing to mansvaronis@riga.lv.
