THE GRAND SUMMER EXHIBITION 2026 AT MANS'S GALLERY
In mid-July, I visited the Grand Summer Exhibition at Mans's Gallery in Jēkabpils. Over thirty-five years of activity, the gallery has established a tradition that has become one of the most important annual events in Latvian painting. Artists from different generations come together here, including both those whose contribution has already secured a lasting place in the history of Latvian art and those who are only now confidently shaping their creative path. The works of nearly one hundred painters reveal the diversity of Latvian painting and its ongoing development.
The curatorial concept of the exhibition deserves special attention. The works are not simply placed in the space in search of interplay between color or material. They create a subtly felt visual dramaturgy, in which each artist's voice naturally resonates with the next. The exhibition reads almost like a poem or a work of prose, with its own rhythm, pauses, climaxes, and moments of silence.
This is not an exhibition about the beauty of painting alone. Alongside the brilliance of color, it also contains sadness, tension, fragility, and depth of reflection. It is precisely this emotional multilayeredness that makes the exhibition a unified and convincing narrative, in which each work retains its individuality while becoming part of a shared conversation about contemporary Latvian painting.
