LATGALE'S ANNIVERSARIES. Ilona Rupaine and Juris Vaivods' Composer Concert

The composers Ilona Rupaine and Juris Vaivods are contemporaries and this year's celebrants, yet more than just their birth years unite them. Both composers are from Latgale, both have sung in choirs and write extensively for choir, and both are currently shaping the musical content of two important Latvian cultural institutions - the Dailes Theatre and the Latgale Embassy GORS. Thanks to the initiative of the State Academic Choir LATVIA and conductor Māris Sirmais, the concert program “Latgale's Anniversaries” was created, featuring choral music by both composers - arrangements of Latgalian folk songs, complemented by instrumental interludes performed by student ethnomusicians from the MIKC Latgale Secondary School of Music and Art.
