Admired and hated by women, desired and condemned by men, Carmen changes the world around her. The hatred toward her is born of the desire this woman arouses...

Director Maria-Eva Sinyerola explains her debut on the Latvian National Opera stage: We decided to portray Carmen’s story in the suburbs, on the outskirts of a great city: children playing in courtyards and provoking the police, drug dealers settling scores with one another, street artists and dancers striving to express themselves... A small and violent world, defined by the unbelievable cruelty of human relationships. We needed an environment in which the social context would deny sensuality, desire, and freedom. Carmen’s body must become a massive counterpoint to the surrounding buildings. It is a kind of new feminism among the inhabitants of the suburbs; a kind of femininity that plays with the laws created by men.
