Ozoliņis Dieti Gāja, Liepu Veda Rociņā

Final concert of the project “Ozoliņis dieti gāja, Liepu veda rociņā”.

In the project “Ozoliņis dieti gāja, Liepu veda rociņā”, with the aim of promoting the creation of artistically high-quality dance repertoire, the Riga Center for Educational Methodology invited folk dance educators to take part in creating choreographic arrangements of original ethnographic dances and games, incorporating them into staged folk dance.

Ineta Bērziņa, chief specialist in the field of folk dance at the Riga Center for Educational Methodology, speaks about the idea behind the project:

“The dancers’ desire to keep dancing was, and still is, admirable! The project began in 2022 during the pandemic, and its main goal was to support folk dance group teachers and return to the origins of dance, the foundation, Latvian ethnographic dances and dance games. In all their diversity, our dance patterns can be compared to the patterns of mittens, skirts, shawls, and belts. They are expressive and nuanced. One cannot help but feel that these patterns have transformed into dance steps and formations. Dancing together is necessary for the development of traditional dance to take shape. We are continuing the project now in order to encourage the involvement of folk dance teachers from Riga educational institutions in the development of original dances, the preservation and transmission of the intangible cultural heritage of the people. We look forward to new works so that on November 11, 2026, the dances selected by the evaluation committee will delight audiences in the hall of the VEF Culture Palace of the Northern Riga Cultural Association, enrich our dance treasury, and honor Latvia on Lāčplēsis Day!”
