A psychological drama about the burden of the past, social prejudice, and family secrets.
The events of the play take place on the eve of the tenth anniversary of the death of the head of the Alving family. The widow Helene is preparing to open an orphanage named after her husband. In honor of the occasion, their son Oswald has returned home after a long absence in Paris. The mother's hopes of rebuilding her relationship with her son are overshadowed by the ghosts of the past, which haunt the residents of the Alving household more strongly than ever on this evening.
Oswald keeps the true reason for his return to himself, while Helene hides the truth about his father from her son. All her life she has tried to preserve the family's flawless image, trying to prevent the father's sins from affecting the son. But the past can no longer be concealed, and its consequences cannot be avoided.
Henrik Ibsen's 1881 play Ghosts (also known as The Haunted) became one of the most controversial works of its time - it provoked sharp criticism and was refused staging in many places. Today, Ghosts is considered one of Henrik Ibsen's most important and psychologically nuanced realist dramas, exploring themes such as heredity and cyclicality, social pressure and double standards, the opposition of truth and lies, freedom and the bonds that restrict it.
