This autumn Placebo will celebrate their 30th anniversary in Riga

Looking back on 30 years of their career, British alternative rock stars Placebo will perform at Xiaomi Arena in Riga on October 16. The concert program will focus on material from the band’s first two albums, “Placebo” and “Without You I'm Nothing,” which many critics and fans alike consider the group’s most creatively striking work.

Nancy Boy, Teenage Angst, 36 Degrees, Every You Every Me, Pure Morning, You Don't Care About Us, Without You I'm Nothing are the songs that once spoke so directly, so sharply, so provocatively to thousands, and now form an essential part of Placebo’s golden hit repertoire.

In the mid-1990s, Britpop dominated in the United Kingdom, and Placebo burst into that scene like a draft through wide-open balcony doors. Teenage maximalism, provocative directness, blurred boundaries of sexuality, mental health, intoxicants - everything that was clearly relevant to young people, but did not dominate pop music at the time, was openly explored in their lyrics.

Looking back on that period, band leader Brian Molko particularly emphasizes the song Nancy Boy: “We reacted very strongly against the machismo, fan call-and-response and revisionism characteristic of Britpop, as well as against nationalism, which we interpreted as musical xenophobia. With the clothes and makeup we wore, we were trying to make a strong political statement about the fluidity of sexuality. We wanted to confuse people, and I think Nancy Boy was ideal for that purpose.”

Brian Molko’s provocatively ambiguous androgynous image added fuel to the speculation and judgment. But the gold status of the debut album “Placebo” and the platinum status of the second album “Without You I'm Nothing,” confirming sales of more than a million copies, clearly showed that a new bright star had appeared in the alternative rock sky.

Marking the album’s third decade, from March 18 it is possible to order a special remastered version of “Placebo RE:CREATED.” The new release includes reworked and enhanced versions of all ten album tracks, as well as two bonus tracks from the original edition, embodying how these songs have evolved over decades of live performance while retaining the raw spirit that originally defined them. The remastered record highlights the intensity and energy that made the original songs resonate so strongly, while also reflecting the band’s growth and the experience accumulated in the years since their debut. Speaking about the new release, Placebo explain:

“We see this record as the director’s cut. We didn’t create it from scratch. We went back to the original tapes and put into the record 30 years spent playing these songs live.

This project is about completing the record, sonically bringing it into the 21st century while preserving the whole and the spirit of the original. It is not about improving it, it wasn’t bad to begin with, it is about finishing it.”

Placebo was formed in 1994, when singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Brian Molko met guitarist and keyboardist Stefan Olsdal, who still remains the band’s constant core.

With 14 million records sold over 30 years, Placebo is undoubtedly one of the leading British alternative rock bands. All 8 of the band’s studio albums have reached at least the top twenty in the UK charts. Meanwhile, 15 singles have reached at least the top forty. Over the course of their career, the band’s musicians have embarked on several major tours, performed at prestigious festivals on both sides of the Atlantic, and earned acclaim from both critics and fans.
