Porta 26 | The Desert Stars of Namibia | Tā kā pērn

From Namibia to Latvia – a world music evening at SunsStudio

On November 4 at 6: 00 PM, the PORTA festival invites you to a special world music evening at SunsStudio, where authentic Namibian traditional music and the new concert program by Latvian musicians "THIS TIME, MUSIC OF OTHER PEOPLES. Part II" will meet in one event.

The special guests of the evening will be "The Desert Stars of Namibia" – an ensemble of traditional music artists led by Professor Dr. Perminus Matiure. Dr. Matiure is an ethnomusicologist at the University of Namibia, a senior lecturer, and one of the leading researchers of traditional music in Southern Africa. Together with the ensemble, he will bring to Latvia the living cultural heritage of Southern Africa - rhythmic dances, polyphonic singing, traditional instruments, and oral storytelling traditions.

The evening will begin with an open masterclass, where everyone interested will have the opportunity to discover the world of traditional Southern African music and its unique singing and music-making traditions.

At 7: 00 PM, a concert program will follow, in which "The Desert Stars of Namibia" will perform songs of the Oshiwambo, Aawambo, and Tswana peoples, traditional dances, African choral singing, the sounds of the mbira, traditional drum rhythms, and musical folk stories. This will be a rare opportunity to experience authentic Namibian cultural heritage in Latvia.

At 9: 00 PM, the Latvian group "Tā kā pērn" will continue the evening, premiering the new concert program THIS TIME, MUSIC OF OTHER PEOPLES 2. Part II. In the program, melodies of various peoples of the world will meet Latvian musical tradition, creating an exciting musical dialogue between cultures.

This project is part of a Baltic States cooperation initiative - identical masterclasses will also take place in Lithuania and Estonia, creating a shared network of professional knowledge exchange in the Baltic region and expanding opportunities for Latvian musicians to take part in an international cultural dialogue.
