Witches
WITCHES
A beginner's magic club
Alma is at a really low point. Her boyfriend has recently left her, and both of her cousins are already tired of talking about it. On top of that, it seems like Alma's new apartment is haunted, but moving out is not an option, because then she would lose the deposit. One cousin suggests that Alma try psychotherapy - probably a sensible idea, but it sounds too time-consuming, expensive, and depressing. The other offers to call in a healer from a TV show. Alma does not really believe in such things, but agrees anyway.
That is how her wanderings through the world of modern witchcraft begin, leading her to women's gatherings, arguments with tarot cards, and spellwork through the tangles of her family tree. But somewhere in the middle of it all, a gateway opens, allowing Alma to look into other eras and meet her counterparts, who also - each driven by a different reason - take their first steps into magic.
The production is based on Daina Tabūna's novel "Witches" (2023), nominated for the European Union Prize for Literature and the Latvian Literature Award of the Year.
