In 2011, for the first time in Latvia's history, the Saeima was dissolved. People hurried to support this decision with enthusiasm. President Valdis Zatlers, whose position the oligarchs had allegedly planned out in the zoo, became a national hero, and the party named after him won the election.

What were the true consequences of the president's order? The president chosen by the "People's Party" presented himself as a fighter against three oligarchs. At the same time, he ushered in a new generation's entry into Latvian politics. The "Zatlers' Reform Party", founded after the order, brought into politics people who now in fact hold all the highest offices in the country, from the president to the mayor of Riga. Those in power are ironically often called zatlerists.

Were the oligarchs pushed aside from Latvian politics, or on the contrary, did they decide for the first time to join forces in order to strengthen their economic interests? The largest media outlets in Latvia becoming directly dependent on the oligarchs, loud corruption scandals, Machiavellian games for state posts and, finally, the invitation of the pro-Russian "Harmony Centre" into the government. Were these the true consequences?

Someone close to the process is said to have said, "we are writing history." So what is it like twenty years later? Did Zatlers deserve the praise he received, or was the dissolution of the Saeima a political trick to keep the president's office? As always, there are more questions than answers.
