ISLAND

The first performance by Renāte Kērda in Latvia

"I want to offer the audience an experience of a "clean slate" - leaving only the title as the first impulse. Because that is where everything begins. Why explain a poem before it has been experienced? Why take away the audience's space for discovery and thought? Why give away a crossword puzzle that is already solved? An island is a place that can at once be personal and public, unreachable and constantly present. It can be a physical place, but also a state, a distance, a boundary. An island for me, an island for you, an island for us. To flee or to stay put?" / R. Kērda

The creative core of Kērda's work has always been focused on life and human existence in all its absurdity and paradoxical nature; in her works she reflects social phenomena and processes in a witty and sensitive way. Her productions are also described as life-affirming, playful, provocative, incisive, and visually rich. Those who have seen Kērda's performances know that they can be wild, stunningly multilayered, evoke a wide range of emotions, and speak to people of different social backgrounds and ages.

Renāte Kērda is an artist who has been creating productions for more than 20 years, and is one of the most acclaimed theatre makers in Estonia.
