On November 12, as part of the exhibition “Averting One’s Gaze. Female Artists in the Zuzāns Collection: 2000-2026,” four artists with different professional experience and artistic visions will discuss changes in Latvian art from 2000 to 2026. We will explore this period through their personal experience, works, and relationship with art.
The discussion will focus on what occupies and inspires the artists, how their view of art has developed, and what has changed in it over time. We will talk about encounters with art that have stayed in memory, beliefs that have remained or been reconsidered, and how the artists view their earlier work today. These stories will help us better understand their thinking and the different ways personal experience enters art.
We will also look at how the opportunities to work and exhibit have changed during this time, how public attitudes toward the themes the artists address have shifted, and the expectations they face.
The discussion will feature artists Rasa Jansone, Kristīne Krauze-Slucka, Dzelde Mierkalne, Līga Spunde, and Katrīna Jaunupe, head of the “Mākslai vajag telpu” foundation.
