On October 30 at 5: 30 p.m., the Valmiera Integrated Library will host the Orbita residency “Practice” event “Reading Matter - Raw Material,” with members of the Valmiera book club in conversation with artists Līga Laurenoviča and Artūrs Punte.

It will be a discussion about the most dramatic stage in a book’s life cycle, disposal. Together, we will look at the death of a book through the eyes of a reader, a librarian, and an artist. We will get to know artistic practices in which former reading matter becomes raw material. We will try to understand exactly what we want to preserve in a book that is being destroyed.

“Reading Matter - Raw Material” involves cooperation with book clubs from the municipality in Valmiera, Rūjiena, Kocēni, Strenči, and Mazsalaca. The main theme of all these conversations is the end of a book’s life cycle.

The Orbita residency “Practice” is being implemented within the program of the project “Furnace: Contemporary Culture for Everyone.”
