Draining Lake Sila
Culture will have to yield to Nature, says Latvian Romantic Jānis Poruks, and after a hundred years he returns to the stage of the National Theatre with a "thriller" about the clash between humans and nature. People's desire for an easier life, by draining Druviena's Lake Sila to gain land for grain, cannot go unpunished, because the Father of the Forest and the Mother of the Lake are not pleased with human actions. Let the deer run through deep forests and people seek happiness elsewhere.
Young director Mārcis Broks will expand the usual territory of theatrical conflict to humanity's struggle with the all-powerful forces of nature, against which the story of Sīmanis and Maija's relationship seems like child's play, whatever its outcome may be.
