The film “Uļa” is an emotional story about identity and belonging, set in 1960s Latvia. Uļa is a teenage Old Believer girl whose unusual height, nearly two meters tall, draws the attention of basketball coaches. She is taken to Riga, where she finds herself in an unfamiliar big city and the world of professional sports. Struggling with inner doubts, the girl soon realizes she must make the most important choice of her life: hide from the world or accept herself and become the best female basketball player in the world.
