International Conference “Scientific Readings of Young Historians XII”

On November 5-6, the Valmiera Museum will host the international conference “Scientific Readings of Young Historians XII” (JVZL). More than 30 young historians will take part in the readings. Anyone interested is invited to attend.

Admission to the conference is free, and no prior registration is required.

On the first day of the conference, speakers will present in English. Young researchers from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Spain, and Azerbaijan will focus on the political and social history of Latvia and the post-Soviet region in the 20th and 21st centuries. The presentations will be devoted to the interwar period and Latvia's international relations, the period of Soviet occupation, and the changes after the collapse of the USSR.

On November 6, presentations in Latvian will be devoted to the history of Latvia from the earliest times to the second half of the 20th century, focusing on archaeology, medieval and early modern history, the interwar period, and the Soviet occupation period.

During the conference, last year's collection of articles, “Scientific Readings of Young Historians XI,” will be launched.

JVZL is an annual tradition, and this year it will take place in Valmiera for the 12th time. The conference has become a platform for young historians, allowing them to share the results of their research and develop professional and academic skills. The conference has also been recognized in the museum sector, receiving the 2024 Museum Society of Latvia Annual Award.

The international conference “Scientific Readings of Young Historians XII” is organized by the Valmiera Museum and the Institute of Latvian History of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Latvia, in cooperation with Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, the Lithuanian Institute of History, and the Institute of History and Archaeology at the University of Tartu. The conference is supported by the State Research Programme project “The History of Latvia in the 20th-21st Centuries: Social Morphogenesis, Heritage, and Challenges” (project No. VPP-IZM-Vēsture-2023/1-0003), and the conference is also supported by Valmiermuiža Brewery.
