THE GLASS MENAGERIE
The memory play The Glass Menagerie by American playwright Tennessee Williams is one of the masterpieces of 20th-century drama, allowing us to feel the fragility of the human inner world and the power of our dreams.
Director Juris Rijnieks invites us to look into the world of The Glass Menagerie: “In difficult times there are people who stand out or are endowed with especially subtle sensitivity, as if they could hear the echoes of distant events, the noise sounding on another continent, or the breath with which whales breathe in the ocean. To those around them, these people seem not quite normal, but they carry within them something familiar to us all - sensations from distant childhood. A way of feeling that perceives the world in all its vastness at once, as a whole. It is hard for us to reproach anyone when we are worried about making a living, work, and human harshness. When circumstances put us in the position of fighters and we have to roll up our sleeves and fight for a place in the sun. When we are afraid for ourselves, for the future, for destruction under this sun. And yet. Fear destroys dreams. Fighting in a world of fear, what is available to you is only what is right before your eyes or placed in the past - the good old days, when things were good. And by living in the past, you have turned your back on tomorrow. But our dreams are stronger than everyday life.”
