M is the most useful assistant you have ever met. He will organize your diary, your new job, even your sex life. The only catch is that once M enters your life, he never leaves it. And he wants to know absolutely everything about you.
M is the smartphone we all have in our pocket: an object that allows the world's biggest companies to track every step we take and make billions from our data; an object we spend more and more time on, often even more than with our nearest and dearest. In 2026, for young professionals like Lucy and Sam, that is the price of living. But for their parents, Joe and Didi, this dubious deal has worn thin, and they decide to stand up to the influence of modern technology and carve out their own, surprising path in life.
Jeff James says: “When I first read Kate Attwell’s witty and biting satire about our toxic relationship with smartphones, what makes it so powerful is that the play says plainly what we all feel but do not dare to say out loud. We are becoming ever more dependent on these technologies, and they demand an ever higher price. Kate’s play is a darkly comic and precise scalpel cut into the analysis of how we live today. I am delighted to bring this timely and very witty production to Valmiera for its European premiere.”
