"From a distance it is easier to see the mistakes people make when populism rages, propaganda, poverty and repression sow fear. So let us take a look - as Brecht puts it - at how exactly a people becomes manipulable, how totalitarianism is born, and how each individual among the people, through their choices, helps bring it about. And it does not matter whether it is the 1930s of the 20th century or the 21st century. A century later it would truly be laughable if the consequences were not so tragic," says director Indra Roga.
Theater history's "golden classic." A representative of epic theater, the German playwright Bertolt Brecht wrote the play Fear and Misery of the Third Reich/Furcht und Elend des Dritten Reiches between 1935 and 1938, in exile in Denmark. In the heat of the moment, about the events of the time, working for radio and writing for newspapers.
"An impressive mosaic of life in Nazi Germany" (Michael Billington, The Guardian) remains a clear-sighted mirror everywhere people allow fear into themselves and lose their inner freedom.
