What can be stronger than a true Irish gunman’s love for his homeland, father, mother, and family? Stronger than a sense of duty and justice? It is love for his cat. Anyone who hurts Tomás will not remain unharmed after Lieutenant Padraic of the Irish National Liberation Army hears about it. Almost anyone.

“The Lieutenant of Inishmore” is a black comedy by the Irish-born English playwright Martin McDonagh, written in 2001 and driven by harsh jokes, misunderstandings, and unexpected twists. The award-winning play has been staged many times around the world, including on Broadway. One of today’s most provocative playwrights says of his work: “I choose the border between comedy and cruelty because one illuminates the other. We all become cruel sometimes, don’t we? And drama has been like that since the Greeks.”

The production had its first version at the Valmiera Summer Theatre Festival in 2020, after which it became part of the Valmiera Theatre repertory. The premiere of the revived version took place on 2 August 2025 at the Valmiera Summer Theatre Festival and is once again returning to the theatre’s repertory.
