What could be stronger than a true Irish throat-cutter’s love for his homeland, father, mother, and family? Stronger than a sense of duty and justice? It is love for his cat. No one who has harmed Thomásín will get away unscathed after Lieutenant Padraic of the Irish National Liberation Army finds out about it. Almost no one.

“The Lieutenant of Inishmore” is a black comedy written in 2001 by the Irish-born English playwright Martin McDonagh, woven through with harsh jokes, misunderstandings, and unexpected twists. The award-winning play has been staged many places around the world, including on Broadway. One of the most provocative contemporary playwrights says of his work: “I choose the line between comedy and cruelty because one illuminates the other. We all become cruel sometimes, don’t we? And that is drama since the Greeks.”

A Valmiera Theatre production, which premiered at the Valmiera Summer Theatre Festival in 2020 and was included in the Valmiera Theatre repertoire.
