GRANDFATHER
No Man's Land is a strip of land between opposing positions. The width of the strip depends on the topographical features of the place. Sometimes this strip is so narrow that you can hear people talking on the other side. In the winter of 1945 in the Courland Pocket, there were cases when Latvian was spoken on both sides of the trench.
Both of my grandfathers fell in battle. One was a Red Army soldier, the other a Legionnaire.
I am trying to understand why?
