GRANDFATHER - online performance

A no-man's-land is a strip of land between opposing positions. The width of the strip depends on the topographical features of the place. Sometimes this strip is so narrow that you can hear people talking on the other side. In the winter of 1945, there were cases in the Courland Pocket where both sides of the trench were speaking Latvian.

Both of my grandfathers fell. One was a Red Army soldier, the other a Legionnaire.

I am trying to understand why?
