In some Godforsaken corner of an Irish village, two brothers are constantly arguing, hating each other and fighting to the death over even the most trivial things. Although no one can remember the reason for the quarrel anymore, both of them, as soon as they open their eyes, set off to argue as if going to work.
The play The Lonesome West (1997) by Irish-born British playwright and screenwriter Martin McDonagh, often staged in Latvia, is the final work in the author's Leenane Trilogy.
"What drew me in was the theme of how the closest family members, brothers, feed on hatred for one another. The dramaturgy is so wonderful because McDonagh can heat it up to the extreme. When it seems there is no way out, a mysteriously insane solution suddenly appears. McDonagh's writing is characterized by very direct language, it is dark, but at the same time very witty, funny, and actually says quite a lot about how we in Latvia often treat one another.
You do not have to look far. If I am driving a car and, heaven forbid, I slightly get in another driver's way, his burst of hatred will be no smaller than in this play. He may well be thinking, why was I even born?" the director draws parallels.
