The Tales of the Vienna Woods

Justīne Kļava after the play by Ödön von Horváth • Director - Elmārs Seņkovs

Tragicomic melodrama in 2 parts

On the city's trendiest shopping street, a fateful meeting takes place - while arranging toy skeletons in the shop window, the beautiful sales consultant Marianne spots her lifelong love approaching: the gambling addict and parasite Alfred. Despite rising inflation, protests from traditionally minded family members, and the fascist takeover brewing in the country, the two young people leave their current wealthy partners to follow love. What could possibly go wrong?

Ödön von Horváth wrote The Tales of the Vienna Woods in 1931, yet today it sounds strikingly contemporary. The Tales of the Vienna Woods is a harsh reminder that authoritarianism does not begin in government buildings or in politicians' heads, but in our language, our relationships, and in our ability or inability to take responsibility for our own lives.
