Exhibition "Always the Sun"

Izstāde

Within the exhibition, works by twenty-seven Greek artists will be shown, whose artistic practices have been influenced by the interplay of geography, light, climate, and cultural heritage.

This is the first exhibition of such scale to present Greek contemporary art in the Baltic region. Inspired by a song by The Stranglers, the exhibition turns to the image of the sun not as a motif, but as a medium of thought, perception, and experience. It explores how the intense light, heat, and openness to life of the Mediterranean region resonate in aesthetic language, survival and adaptation strategies, and a sense of community.

For Riga, a northern city that is almost always thirsty for sunlight, this exhibition offers an encounter with a southern sensibility: not exotic, but grounded, real, and existential. It is a vision of a sun-inspired dialogue between North and South, the Baltics and the Mediterranean region - a conversation, not a collision. It encourages light to be perceived not only as a symbol, but also as a bearer of knowledge. In the ancient Greek understanding, light can reveal truth, but the southern sun, unlike the cool light of Northern enlightenment, is contradictory. It enchants, illuminates, and dazzles. It invites us to feel, experience, and listen rather than observe at a distance.
